11 October 2005

Tuesday 11 October 2005 21:30-22:15 (Radio 3)

What is the lasting appeal of the photographs of Diane Arbus - that even fashion photographers mimic her? And we announce exclusively the winner of the Paul Foot Award - the first annual prize for campaigning journalism.

Duration:

45 minutes

Programme details

Diane Arbus's photographs of carnival performers, nudists, the insane, transvestites and the eccentric taken during the 1950s and 60s are some of the most instantly recognised in the world, despite the fact that her work appeared in very few shows whilst she was alive.

As a major exhibition of over 200 of her pictures opens at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, together with contact sheets, cameras, letters and other writings, the writer and critic Geoff Dyer, and the photographer Eammon MacCabe critically discuss her contribution to photography past and present.

For the extrovert and exuberant American choreographer Mark Morris, music from Tamil film scores to Robert Schumann, is the driving force behind every piece he creates, as well as the reason he danced in the first place. Today he is one of contemporary dances greatest living exponents - notable for having dancers of all different shapes and sizes, who move in great swathes of rhythm across the stage. It's like seeing notes dance on the stage. The night after his tour opens in Newcastle, Mark Morris speaks to Isabel Hilton about why he has called ballet dancers veal in a cage. And how vaudeville makes the moves happen in his work.

And finally - an exclusive to Night Waves - the first winner of the Paul Foot prize for campaigning journalism will be announced - hot off the press and live from the award ceremony.

So join us where the action is on Night Waves with Isabel Hilton just gone 35 minutes past nine on BBC Radio 3.

Presenter: Isabel Hilton
Producer: Ariane Koek
