Youth Culture

Wednesday 7 May 2008 21:45-22:30 (Radio 3)

Philip Dodd is joined by pirate radio and club DJ Matt Mason to explore whether 'youth culture' has anything meaningful to offer to our society, or as whether as writer Andrew O'Hagan recently stated, it is shallow and narcissistic, driven by the 'venal instincts of a generation of greedy teenagers'.

Muslim Think Tanks
In the past month two new Muslim think tanks have been launched in the UK. The Quilliam Foundation to try to revive a genuinely Western Islam and British Muslims for Secular Democracy to unite Muslims and encourage religious understanding through the separation of state and faith. Rashad Ali from the Quilliam Foundation and to Yasmin Alibhai-Brown from British Muslims for Secular Democracy join Philip Dodd to discuss work and agenda of each organisation and how their ideas fit into inter-Muslim discourse.

Grayson Perry
Philip Dodd speaks to the artist Grayson Perry about a new touring exhibition he has curated from the Arts Council's collection.
He explains the thinking behind his selection and why he was drawn to the early, less glamorous works in the collection.
Arts Council Collection is managed by Southbank Centre and the show is being toured by Hayward Touring. Click here for more details

The Ebbsfleet Landmark
The five short listed artists for the £2million Ebbsfleet Landmark have been unveiled, Daniel Buren, Richard Deacon, Christopher Le Brun, Mark Wallinger and Rachel Whiteread. The Ebbsfleet Landmark is the most significant public art commission since Antony Gormley's Angel of the North ten years ago and will be a symbol of the planned new development of Ebbsfleet Valley in North Kent. Philip talks to brand expert Barry Delaney about this landmark.

Youth Culture
Night Waves investigates a new take on youth culture. Philip is joined in the studio by Matt Mason whose new book reassesses its contentious reputation, and makes the case that it is youth culture -whether graffiti, piracy or hacking - which has had led to the innovations and ideas which change the mainstream itself for the better.
The Pirates Dilemma is published by Penguin Books
