Poet Kathleen Jamie rounds off Night Waves' series of letters as part of the BBC Picture of Britain series with a meditation on her Scottish surroundings and what landscape means to her.
Programme Details
On Night Waves Philip Dodd explores the life and work of Cedric Price, the radical architect who believed buildings should only last as long as they were useful and for one building even supplied a manual with instructions for its demolition. The Aviary at London Zoo is one of the few examples of his work it is still possible to see but a new Design Museum exhibition demonstrates how his ideas stretched from a remodelling of the South Bank that anticipated the London Eye by 20 years to an animal pen that could be converted for human sunbathing and picnicking when not in use.
Philip also talks to Ann Widdecombe as she enters a schizophrenic fortnight as both writer and television agony aunt. Her new novel explores the cultural shifts experienced by the illegitimate son of a young French woman and a high-ranking German soldier, growing up in post-war Europe. Philip talks to her about this and the shift she has made from ministerial politics to popular television entertainment in Ann Widdecombe to the Rescue which sees her travelling Britain to wade in with advice to people with problems.
And Night Waves also explores film in South Africa as it finally starts to bear the fruit of the shift to democracy, ten years on.
Join Philip Dodd for Night Waves this evening at the usual time of 9.30pm.
