Paul Allen considers the hold that shadows have had over our fears and imaginations. Roberto Casati's book The Shadow Club explores their importance to philosophers, astromers, scientists and artists from Plato's Cave to unlocking the structure of the solar system. Also, the first in a series of letters from Magnum photographers telling the stories behind some of the most iconic images of the last century.

Pre-Raphaelite writers jostle for space with existential detectives on Night Waves. The detectives in this case are Lily Tomlin and Dustin Hoffman - two of the stars in David O Russell's new film, I Heart Huckabees. The Pre-Raphaelites are William Morris and Dante Gabriel Rossetti - the main protagonists in Peter Whelan's latest play, The Earthly Paradise. Both fall under Paul Allen's scrutiny on Night Waves.
Also, a personal tribute to the power and beauty of shadows from the painter Brad Lochore.
The poet Bill Herbert shares his thoughts on Paula Rego's new altar piece for Durham Cathedral.
