24 January 2006

Tuesday 24 January 2006 21:30-22:15 (Radio 3)

Susan Hitch talks to Stella Tillyard about the turbulent siblings of George III and examines the legacy of Edward Said's Orientalism.

Duration:

45 minutes

Programme Details

On Night Waves tonight, Susan Hitch talks to Stella Tillyard about the scandalous lives of George III's siblings, whose lives were followed by a celebrity-obsessed public every bit as scandal-hungry as today's.

Edward Said's book Orientalism has influenced generations of scholars with its ideas about how West sees East, but academic Robert Irwin - a defiant Orientalist - charges Said with discrediting a discipline which has contributed vastly to understanding between cultures. He is joined by Basim Musallam to discuss Said's intellectual legacy.

Also in the programme, William Feaver reviews a new exhibition of the work of Andy Warhol, and, as the J. Paul Getty Museum reopens in California, Micheline Wandor reflects on the controversial circumstances of its rebirth.

That's all in Night Waves with Susan Hitch here on Radio 3 at 9.30pm.
