On Night Waves tonight, pianist, conductor and, now, Reith Lecturer Daniel Barenboim's ideas are scrutinised. What role can music play in society today? And do we live in a visual culture so dominant that we have forgotten how to listen?
Playwright Peter Shaffer, best known for his portrait of Mozart in Amadeus, talks to Paul Allen about the revival of his 1964 play "Royal Hunt of the Sun" which contains the famous stage direction "...they cross the Andes!"
And Melvyn Bragg comes into studio to discuss his choice of the "12 Books that Changed the World". No room for more than one work of literature, but ample space for the Rule Book of Association Football. Paul and guests tackle his selection and offer some substitute ideas.
