Programme Details
On Night Waves Philip Dodd reviews the final instalment of ENO's Ring cycle, directed by Phyllida Lloyd and conducted by Paul Daniel. Will Twilight of the Gods build on the success of Siegfried or revisit the mixed reception of parts one and two?
Recreated scenes have been central to documentary making from its beginnings. As this year's Oscar winning documentary short comes under fire for using recreated scenes, Philip looks at its history and discusses when it is and is not acceptable, with its director Bobby Houston and British documentary maker Jane Treays. As our culture of blurring fact and fiction continues to grow, how has this made an impact on the ethics of documentary filmmaking?
And Philip talks to documentary-maker Saul Dibb on the release of his first feature film, set in east London, Bullet Boy which he has described as 'Kes, with guns'. Is this superficial exploitation of a serious subject or social realism in the tradition of Play for Today?
