Novelist Jonathan Safran Foer talks to Matthew Sweet about his new novel Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

Jonathan Safran Foer is one of the brightest names in contemporary fiction. When his debut novel, Everything is Illuminated, came out three years ago it won both the National Jewish Book Award and the Guardian's First Book Award. It was chosen by writers as varied as Joyce Carol Oates, Susan Sontag and Tom Paulin as their book of the year and it was heaped with critical acclaim. His second novel, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is published this week and it seems likely to be just as well received. On Night Waves he talks to Matthew Sweet about fiction and autobiography and the impulse which drove him to write about the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre.
This week's big cinema release is SinCity starring Bruce Willis, Clive Owen and Mickey Rourke. Matthew will be asking the film's creator and co-director, Frank Miller, what makes a hero in the twenty first century and why it was worth bringing his groundbreaking comic books to the screen. There'll also be an assessment of Herzog and de Meuron - the architectural practice responsible for designing Tate Modern, Prada's Tokyo store and the National Stadium for the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. And Susannah Clapp will be reviewing the first night of Neil LaBute's play This is How it Goes .
