Programme Details
The Millennium Bridge in Gateshead... the Gherkin in London and the Imperial War Museum in Salford... three examples of contemporary, life-enhancing architecture... but are they enough to offset the sort of environment most of us encounter every day of our lives? Many would answer no - among them some of Britain's best known architects and the body which represents them - RIBA. They believe the time has come for action and they're publishing a 21 point manifesto setting out how we could revolutionise our environment and create better homes and public buildings for ourselves. They say too that it will lead to more sustainable communities and they claim that there are votes in it for the politicians who sign up. This evening in Night Waves Undercurrents Isabel Hilton will be asking how we got to the point where we need a manifesto to stop us from wilfully destroying our environment and who should bear responsibility for our predicament. To consider these questions and the viability of the manifesto she'll be joined by the architects George Ferguson and Angela Brady and by Jonathan Glancey and Paul Finch, two of the country's leading architecture critics..........that's Night Waves Undercurrents live on BBC Radio 3 at 9.35pm.
