Moondog: All is Loneliness; Bird's Lament (2.55)
Moondog's real name was Louis Hardin . Born in Kansas in 1916, he lost his sight at the age of 16 when a dynamite cap exploded in his face. Later he moved to New York , where he played his music in the streets, dressed in robes, with long hair and a beard that gave him the look of a holy man. He later moved on to wearing a horned helmet and carrying a spear. In 1974 he relocated to Germany , where he died in 1999. These two fine examples of his simple yet moving music illustrate why Igor Stravinsky was moved to say 'Do right by this man, he's a good musician.'
Bird's Lament, inspired by Charlie Parker , was famously sampled and remixed by Mr Scruff ; All Is Loneliness was covered by Janis Joplin , Big Brother and the Holding Company.
