Interview: Van Dyke Parks (34.30)
When Brian Wilson began work on the new recording of abandoned Beach Boys masterpiece SMiLE, he brought in Van Dyke Parks to help complete the work they had first begun in late 1966. Working with Darian Sahanaja of LA group the Wondermints as a kind of 'musical secretary', they pieced together the abandoned fragments and in a burst of activity, recorded the three movements that make up the album in a week this April, at Sunset Sound in LA: one of the studios which had hosted the original sessions.
Brian Wilson: Wonderful; Heroes and Villains; Surf's Up; Cabinessence; Good Vibrations

Here are two versions of the song which originally appeared on the final Pixies album Trompe le Monde. The first version is Pixies' chief songwriter Black Francis' solo demo recording, made in 1987 before any Pixies records had been released. It consists of Francis accompanying himself on acoustic guitar and singing into a cassette recorder owned by Gary Smith, who produced the first Pixies album Come on Pilgrim. The second version was recorded in Hackney, London in July 2003 with two pale boys Andy Diagram (trumpet/electronics) and Keith Moliné (guitar/violin/electronics).

Brian Wilson: Mrs. O'Leary's Cow (2.25)
When Brian Wilson recorded the original version of this in 1967 he was alarmed to hear that the same evening two fires had broken out in the same LA district. He was rumoured to have destroyed the master tapes as a result. The same piece of music, reworked and retitled Fall Breaks and Back to Winter appeared on the Beach Boys' 1967 album Smiley Smile.
Mrs O'Leary's Cow was the animal which supposedly started the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 by kicking over a lighted lamp.
