Hugh Davies/Max Eastley: Mahu Symphony part 4 (6.00)
The musicologist and instrument inventor/builder Hugh Davies died from cancer on January 1st this year, aged 61. A former assistant of Karlheinz Stockhausen, he was creating his own electronic instruments in the days before synthesisers, and was one of the first to take them into a live performance context. He is widely credited with the rise to prominence of the table as a vital performance tool. One of his most famous inventions was the Shozyg (so named because the musical objects which adorned it all appeared in the SHO-ZYG volume of an old encyclopaedia), heard on Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden album and in Harrison Birtwistle's Medusa.
On this track Hugh is playing the Multi Shozyg, accompanied by Max Eastley on his own creation, known as the Arc.
