Solex is the recording name of Amsterdam record store owner Elisabeth Esselink, who scours her own stock for suitable samples and builds them into tracks in a bunker beneath the shop floor.

Clogs: Sticks & Nails (8.15)
The main guitar sound on this track was produced by threading two nails through the strings, close to the bridge, with an altered tuning to enhance the strange harmonics this technique produces.

This comes from a new 3-CD set by Steven Stapleton, aka Nurse With Wound. The original material was recorded 2001-2003 then 'dissected, fertilised and re-grown' by Jim O'Rourke in 2003. Woodwinds are by Hansi Fischer and the late Tim Belbe of Xhol Caravan; apocalyptic guitar is by David Tibet. On the other 2 CDs in the set, the original material is reworked by Cyclobe and Irr.app.(ext.).

Fred Frith: Absent Friends (4.01)
Nowadays, Fred Frith is professor of composition at Mills College in Oakland, California, specialising in improvisation. On the way, he has been a member of UK avant rock band Henry Cow, and has contributed to albums by the likes of Robert Wyatt and Brian Eno. A few items from his solo back catalogue are being re-released; this one was recorded at home on a 4-track tape recorder in the summer of 1983.

Colin Black: Pythagoras Daydreaming of a Micro Polyphonic Sound Mass Near a Small Creek on Samos (5.14)
Soundprints: The Greek Imprints was commissioned by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation to coincide with last year's Olympic Games, and was created by Australian composer and sound artist Colin Black, in collaboration with ABC Radio producer Yanna Black. This track features the sound of a treated bouzouki, and attempts to portray what must have been going on in Pythagoras' head.
