Tonight's programme continues the summer season of repeats of the most popular gigs broadcast over the last year, as voted for by listeners. This week Jez Nelson introduces two very different exclusive studio sessions.
The first captures one of Jazz on 3's favourite UK saxophonists, Iain Ballamy, alongside the prodigiously talented Norwegian accordion player Stian Carstensen - a duo which has been captivated audiences across Europe recently.
The second session was originally broadcast on the 10th anniversary of Frank Zappa's death last December, and reunites some of his finest sidemen to perform some classic Zappa material, as well as a few specially written originals.
Frank Zappa didn't like jazz. He once famously said "Jazz is not dead - it just smells funny!" However, much of his music shows a jazz influence, his recorded work features some of the most dazzling improvisers of their time, and he has in turn influenced contemporary jazz.
Recorded in Los Angeles, the reunion includes legendary drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, the Fowler brothers, Walt and Bruce, on brass, bassist Arthur Barrow, and keyboard player Tommy Mars.
