Hermeto Pascoal
Friday 11 June 2004 23:30-1:00 (Radio 3)
This week Jez presents a live concert recording of eccentric Brazilian bandleader Hermeto Pascoal.
First coming to prominence as part of Miles Davis' circle in the early seventies, he was also a key influence on the British jazz revival of the eighties. Sometimes described as the 'Brazilian Duke Ellington', he is a complete musician equally able to conjure music from a bottle, balloon pump or kettle as from the piano or flute.
Tonight's concert focuses on him as an arranger and composer fronting a large big band full of top British talent.
