London Jazz Festival

Jez Nelson interviews Charles Lloyd and presents a concert recorded at the London Jazz festival.
After apprenticeships with Chico Hamilton and Cannonball Adderley, saxophonist /flautist Charles Lloyd formed his own band introducing Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette along with veterans Ron McLure and Cecil McBee. The group achieved rare fame when Lloyd's album Forest Flower, recorded at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1966, became the first jazz album to sell a million copies.
Lloyd's music brought together the avant-garde, impressionistic harmonics, and global rhythms with a hypnotic, lyrical intensity.
During a substantial hiatus during the 70s and 80s Lloyd dedicated himself to self-discovery and his return recordings for the ECM label in the 90s display that same lyrical intensity coupled with a powerful spirituality.
This concert recorded at the London Jazz Festival teams Lloyd with virtuoso tabla player Zakir Hussain and kit drummer Eric Harland and the interplay between these exceptional players creates rich, compulsive and life-affirming music.
