Sam Rivers Big Band
Friday 10 December 2004 23:30-1:00 (Radio 3)
Jez Nelson presents a concert recording from one of the key figures of the sixties revolution in jazz - Sam Rivers. Recording classic albums for Blue Note, including Fuschia Swing Song, he was a founder member of the Jazz Composers Guild and enjoyed a brief spell in the Miles Davis band. In the seventies he became a leader of the New York loft scene. Tonight's concert was a headline event at this year's London Jazz Festival and features Sam Rivers with his trio alongside a hand picked British big band.
