Jackie McLean grew up in Harlem with bop already flowering around him. He played in a neighbourhood band that included Sonny Rollins and Kenny Drew. After school hours, he would jam and study with Bud Powell and, in an intimate and touching conversation with Alyn Shipton, he describes how Powell acted as his mentor and gained him entry into the Miles Davis band where he was playing alongside Sonny Rollins.
