100 Jazz Profiles
Dave Holland
1946 - present
Bassist and bandleader. Born in Wolverhampton, Holland grew up in the UK, and was a self taught player of ukulele, guitar and electric bass. Later he studied double bass at the Guildhall School in London, but in his late teens he was already one of the most versatile and in-demand bassists in London, playing with everyone from free jazz players like Evan Parker to mainstreamers like Humphrey Lyttelton or John Dankworth. He was also house bass player at Ronnie Scott's club, backing many American guests.

In 1968 at the age of 22, Dave was asked to join Miles Davis, and moved permanently to the USA. He played both electric and acoustic bass with Davis, and appeared on such classic albums as Filles De Kilimanjaro and Bitches Brew. On leaving Davis in 1970 he joined the free jazz group Circle, whose drummer Barry Altschul and saxophonist Anthony Braxton went on to become founders (along with Sam Rivers) of Dave's first recording quartet for ECM.

In the 70s, Holland worked with a huge variety of musicians, notably Rivers and also John Abercrombie (who with Jack DeJohnette joined Dave in the trio Gateway). In the early 1980s he began leading his own bands, and has done so ever since. He has particularly favoured quintet formats, often with no chordal instrument, and his long-term associates have included trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, trombonists Julian Priester and Robin Eubanks, and saxophonist Steve Coleman.

Although he has recorded on cello and on bass guitar, Holland is one of the most talented double bass players in jazz, with a warm tone and great flexibility. He has worked with such bandleaders as Herbie Hancock and Betty Carter, but his main work since the 80s has been his own bands, his current quintet becoming the nucleus of a Grammy-winning big band, that has developed Dave's talents both as a leader and composer.
