I was lucky enough to be able to sing in a good school choir (in the 1960's) . But once my interest in music was aroused I was able to make use of a very good local public music library, full of scores, sheet music and LP records you could take home and discover great music at your leisure. In many places this is no longer available and certainly not free, as it was in many areas in the 1970's. We should also not forget that one of the best education authorities for providing music in schools, the Greater London Education Authority was abolished and disbanded by a Tory government, out of political pique.
