In the 1970s I remember an OU Education course where two brothers were talking and one of them seemed to have become middle class because he was academically more advanced than his brother. He had even lost some of his London accent, and though his 'lower class' brother had more money he seemed to resent the greater respect that some people showed to his clever brother. School seems to reinforce social class resentments. Perhaps scholarship is felt to be a betrayal of the working class. It's silly I know.We loved to come to this island in the 1930s from socially stratified Berkshire to a little community where anyone spoke to you as a social equal.
