13. Tim Smit: Inspiration in Education

Tim Smit is inspirational co-founder and Chief Executive of the multi-award winning Eden Project. Eden is about connecting plants, people and places and is a living demonstration of regeneration. Tim believes that only bold thinking will tackle Britain's educational crisis.

We regret that, owing to unforeseen events, Tim Smit was unable to appear at the Free Thinking festival.

Your thoughts

The schedule says that the Tuesday evening Free Thinking broadacst included Tim Smit's lecture on the future of education. I could not listen to the broadcast, but have played the "listen again" file for Tuesday in full, and there is no mention of Tim Smit. Most of the programme is the debate about theatre, and then a specially commissioned drama. There is also a debate with young people about school exams.Either:1. Tim Smit did not appear (so the schedule details are wrong), or 2.he was on the programme, but the werong sound file is playing on the Tuesday "listrn again".Can anyone help clarify this? Thank you.

Hello Michael, Unfortunately Tim Smit was unable to take part because of circumstances beyond his control so the billed programme was replaced with the one you heard. You're right that the event and programme information hasn't been updated yet - apologies. We'll try to correct this soon.

My children have a home-based education. For them, no education happens in school because they don't attend. They are free to study any subject they choose, for as long as they choose. They are free to be themselves, without peer pressure. They are free from the pressure to define themselves by what material things they own, and are free instead to define themselves by what is in their heads and their hearts. Who needs schools? They are state sponsored childcare and should be viewed as not a lot more.

The best education happens in schools where all the kids feel connected, valued and have fun. It is where the curriculum is engaging and relevant and there are opportunities to think, discuss and experiment. Too much education happens in schools where there are battles for control, competition is rife and positive relationships between everyone are ignored because the paperwork leaves no time. The kids still learn but not necessarily what is valuable to them and to a future civil society
