William Lawes, an Unmathematical Genius
Saturday 8 April 2006 13:00-14:00 (Radio 3)
Composer to the court of Charles I, Lawes died young in the turmoil of the Civil War. His music is both exquisitely beautiful and unerringly experimental for its time. Criticised in his own age for failing to adhere to the mathematical rules of music, Lawes still managed to find favour with the King, who referred to him as the 'father of musik'. Andrew Manze explores the life and work of this neglected composer.
