Ornaments of the French Baroque

Saturday 24 March 2007 13:00-14:00 (Radio 3)

Catherine Bott travels to Brussels to explore some exemplary repertoire with baroque flautist Barthold Kuijken. Ornamentation is fundamental to human beings. We embellish our bodies with clothing, cosmetics and jewellery, we ornament our language, our houses, our tools, even our graves. A player of baroque music learns to ornament a musical line as second nature. But, as with any language, there are certain rules.
