The Orpheus of Utrecht and His Garden of Delights
Sunday 7 May 2006 13:00-14:00 (Radio 3)
Catherine Bott visits Utrecht to trace the life, work and legacy of one of the most remarkable figures in 17th Century musical life, and the man who became known as the Orpheus of Utrecht - Jacob van Eyck.
Blind from birth, he became widely known as a carillonneur, recorder player, and leading expert in the field of bell casting and tuning. Perhaps his greatest achievement, though, is the series of pieces for recorder Der Flyten Lust-hof (The Flute's Garden of Delight) - the largest solo collection of music for one single instrument ever printed.
