Open the Artwork

Part interactive story, part audiovisual tool, Rhapsody is a new work created for Dots & Lines by Austrian artist, Tinhiko. In this work the artist presents us with the concept of non-linear story telling as the score. Tinkino's collaborator, writer Matthias Goldmann, sets the scene for Rhapsody in his introductory text:

"Imagine a digital age Alice returning from a string of Wonderland encounters. She is ready to step through the looking glass into new virtual worlds. Her daydreams take the form of pixels, particles, waves, and elements that make up our on-screen mirror imagery. The resulting animation zooms in on the cool chemistry of the birth process of images"

Users explore an abstracted account of Alice's encounters by moving their mouse within an interactive environment. As with more traditional forms of musical story telling, the narrative within Rhapsody is divided into sections, each one with its own character. Visual forms, resembling the 'dots' evoked in the exhibition title, combine to make pixilated lines. The visual 'dots' and 'lines' represent a navigation system to allow users to move through the audio-visual storyline and trigger new events. The two dots in the upper left corner can be used to enter the second and third episode of the unfolding tale. The trace-routes created by Tinhoko's 'dots' record the users' pattern of movement through the narrative, and present us with a visualisation of the composition as it unfolds. These 'dots' are, in effect, a score.
