Open the Artwork

RNA is an audiovisual artwork inspired by the human genome sequence. For this extraordinary piece, UK based artist, Stanza, extracted his own blood to obtain a sample of DNA. He then used his genetic code to construct visual and auditory patterns. Instead of using a traditional scoring system, RNA uses a biological system to visualise a sound composition. Though originating from the viscera of the human body, RNA can only be experienced in the digital domain of the internet. It is seductive, multi-sensory, non-linear and interactive.

RNA is part of a larger series of online works, which also include junker , geno , genomixer , and mutator . These works enable online visitors to intermix or breed their own works, using visual and sonic interpretations of DNA sequences. Users can look at audio-visual representations of chromosomes, and create their own variables. Unique amongst the works in Dots & Lines , RNA positions genetic code as notation, DNA as musical score.
