AN INTRODUCTION TO BACH'S SOLO INSTRUMENTAL WORKS

KEY WORKS

Partita no.2 for solo violin (including the Chaconne)
Cello Suites
Lute Suites

Solo, unaccompanied music - an introduction

The most commonly recognised solo instrumental works by Bach are the sonatas and partitas for violin, and the suites for cello (and lute). As well as being a virtuoso organist, Bach was an accomplished string player, and the violin and cello works are regarded now, as then, as a pinnacle of technical achievement. Apart from the sheer technical skill required to pull them off, from the listener's perspective the unique genius of these works lies in understanding the harmonies implied in the weaving of the solo lines, augmented by polyphonic effects achieved by playing with the technique of double-stopping.
