Playlist 3 for all Prom Archive Season
3 for all will be celebrating this year's Prom season by broadcasting one archive Prom performance a week, working successively through the decades and starting with the 1950s. But the choice of performance is up to you!
First up is the 1950s and it's a choice between Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto no. 2, performed by the Odessa-born pianist Benno Moiseiwitch, whom Rachmaninov considered to be the greatest interpreter of his works, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sir Malcolm Sargent
Or
The September 1955 Prom recording of Delius's rarely heard Piano Concerto, performed by Moiseiwitch with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sir Malcolm Sargent.
From the 1960s Prom archives, you can choose between the following:
John Tavener's dramatic cantata The Whale , which catapulted the young composer to fame making use of pre-recorded tape, amplified percussion and loudhailer, performed by the London Sinfonietta under David Atherton.
Or
Tchaikovsky's symphonic fantasy Francesca da Rimini , which Tchaikovksy composed and fully orchestrated in just six weeks, performed by the LSO under Leopold Stokowski.
All you have to do is send an email to
[email protected]
and just state 1950s: 'Rachmaninov' or 'Delius'; and 1960s: 'Tavener' or 'Tchaikovsky' - don't forget to let us have your name and address!
