Jamie, Leeds This song has lovely, but not Christmassy, memory for me. 21 August 1981, Slade played an amazing set at the Castle Donnington festival. To see 70,000 rockers singing along to 'Merry Christmas' in the middle of August was beautiful and surreal. Spinal Tap has never compared after seeing that.
mark from Bude Takes me back to Home in 1973 Guildford. Not only is it great timeless music,it also has fantastic lyrics. The line beginning "Does your Granny always tell you that the old songs are the best" was a prophesy for the songs future. As someone else pointed out,the only downside is that Slade have been stigmatised by the Christmas song narrow view of many people.Anyone who has real knowledge of Slades music will know that they did so MANY other GREAT tracks, and as a live band were simply peerless. The musicianship of Jim Lea and Noddy Holder was of the highest calibre,Jims Bass work is legendary,Nods Rhythm Guitar brilliant, and then there was THAT Voice! As John Lennon once remarked "I love the Singer he sounds like me",yes John but even better.
Barrie Chessell, Rugby This enduring and cheerful song was issued during the miners' strike of 1973/4 at the time of Edward Heath's Conservative government. Lack of coal for the power stations meant that power cuts were commonplace and candles were an alternative form of lighting. So it was not such a Merry Christmas for many people; it was a really dreadful time. Most people under 40 would remember little of this or have no experience of this time at all. Nevertheless it's a great song which I hope will be played for many years yet.

Per Andrén, Sweden A simple and fantastic song like many of their other tunes from then, they were fabulous. Noddy and his voice was really something else and has never been bettered by anyone else.

Hamilton, Ontario, Canada That Christmas in`73 was the last I spent in the UK just before immigrating to Canada. Slade seemed to be everywhere that Xmas and the song always brings back memories of an exciting time for me.
Paul Reus Bilthoven The Netherlands I 've seen Slade live in Holland (Lochem) (1980)
Great band and then no Christmas time (it was a summer festival)

Margaret - Brisbane Australia Xmas 1973 - I was in Scotland on holidays and spent what turned out to be the last Xmas I would spend with all 4 of my grandparents. It was the most magic time. The song by Slade will always stick in my memory as it was part of the most magic month of my life.
Gillian Edwards Birmingham What can you say? This is one of the best christmas tunes ever no arguments!! We love you Slade.
Lynex, Cheshire I was 17 in 1973 and going out with the best looking girl in town! I remember singing along to this in the pub at lunchtime with all my other underage drinking mates! Great times we will never see the like of again.
Chris Tokyo I heard this song in a supermarket here in Tokyo the other day -- there's no escape!!!
Russ - Llanelli Remember seeing Slade on TOTP, Jim`ll Fix It, Crackerjack, and everywhere else, sounding great and looking brilliant. Even at the age of 12 in 1973 they sounded like no other band, and I was hooked from then on.
Only downside is that Slade are never remembered for anything other than MerryC, but umpteen Hits and albums poured out for years, and they became one of our greatest and loudest live rock bands. Merry Christmas will be with us probably for ever, from Tesco veg aisle to office parties, and long may Slade`s music be played!! Jim Lea for Prime Minister!
Greg Owen / Orlando Florida I remember seeing Slade perform this at the Odeon in Birmingham New Street around 1980. Noddy dressed as Santa and people climbing on stage to kiss him. A classic !!
Michael ,Birmingham Got to be one of the best Christmas greats ever.
No one else but noddy Holder could do a Christmas song with such power it will always be a Christmas smash.
Chigasaki, Japan Still the best ever Xmas song. Will live for ever. First heard it when I was 11 secretly listening to tom Brown`s top 40 -Radio 1- in 1973. Saw Noddy and the Boys complete with Noddy as Father christmas perform it live at the christmas Ball at Keele university just down the road from their native Wolverhampton in 1981 or 1982 and still hearing it now in Japan where I teach young kids who love the song.Part of my life and sums up Xmas and yes I did get a mastermind game that Xmas.
Malcolm Emery Ballymena Slade and Santa at age 8 in '73...perfect.Now age 39 perfectly nostalgic.
Steve Reading Berks Still The Best.
Paul Aston One of the best Christmas songs of all time. Never been bettered!
