| that showed their ability to master just about any style. Yet they were in danger of being regarded as a novelty act. 1975’s album The Original Soundtrack broke the mould - it contained “I’m Not In Love”. This time the archness was welded to a gorgeously crafted arrangement that floated beneath the mock cynicism of the lyrics. Multi-layered backing vocals gave the whole thing an other-worldly quality that was only compounded by the extraordinary middle eight with its whispered “big boys don’t cry” motif. It became a #1 that appealed both to the fans that wanted grown up pop and to people who wanted a slow dance at the end of the disco.
