JUNIOR CHOICE WITH ED STEWART

As part of Radio 2's 40th birthday celebrations, Ed 'Stewpot' Stewart returned for a one-off reprise of the evergreen Junior Choice, which ran until the 1980s on Radio 2.

The original presenter was the late Leslie Crowther, with Ed Stewart taking over on 24th February 1968. The show itself began many years before on the Light Programme, where it was known as "Children's Favourites".

Ed would love to hear your memories of Junior Choice – maybe you had a request on the programme, or there’s a particular song that takes you back to your childhood. You can leave a comment below to share your memories with other Junior Choice fans.

What are your memories of Junior Choice?

My favourite record of the early seventies was "Hello Mother, Hello Father" & I remember learning all the words and singing along to to "Ernie (The Fastest Milkman In The West)" with Benny Hill and then only years later realising what an innuendo was!!! To hear it again would bring back lots of happy memories

    Alan, Barnstaple
I listened to Ed "Stewpot" Stewart, this morning, presenting his Junior Choice show, with very fond memories. I can still remember having breakfast on a Saturday and Sunday morning with "Stewpot" on the radio in the background, and watching him on "Crackerjack!!!" That must have been at least thirty years ago. I'm nearly 38 now. Great memories!!!, and I only wish that the people at radio two could either bring this show back because it is obviously still a very popular format and to also bring back good old Ed Stewart on radio two, I miss him very much!

Hi! my best memory of the stewpot show was having my name read out for my 10th birthday! My family didn't believe that my name was mentioned,( I hadn't told anyone that I had sent in a request) so luckily for me as the show was repeated on the sunday I dragged my whole family out of bed and made tham listen-I wasn't popular, but they did get to hear and at last I felt believed!I loved listening to the ed stewpot show as during the week I had to endure the likes of 'wagoners walk'I was forbidden to chat and had to polish all the shoes during that programme which was on after I got home from school.Junior choice was a programme for the trainee teenager in me.Happy days and thanks Ed for giving me my moment of fame.

    John Roberts
Thanks for the happy, happy memories! Junior Choice with Ed Stewart was fantastic. Why can't our children have innocent programs like this to listen to nowadays? Why can't a similar program be iniated to appeal to young children your audience of the future?

    Shirley of Chelmsford
Junior Choice should be brought back as the kids of today are missing so much through the wonderful "silly" records like Ernie the milkman and Test Pilot Kenneth Williams etc. Also the adults really enjoy it as well.

    Mark, Dudley
I loved listening to Junior Choice after bath time when I was little. I even got the Junior Choice Album! It now gets played to my daughter who loves the John Inman version of Teddy Bears picnic, which seams to take on a whole new meaning now I am just a bit older!

    Alison, Edinburgh
Loved the show this morning but it was too short! Thanks for the memories.

    Liz - Lincoln

I was really excited when I heard the trailer for this show - I was suddenly whizzed back to breakfast at the weekend when I was 5 or 6. I thought as I heard the trailer , I wonder if they will play Sparky? As I tuned in, in the car after missing five minutes I heard that weird voice and felt as though I should be eating small skinless pork sausages, which is strange as I have been a veggie since I was 15! Amazing what nostalgia does. Thank you lots. Jill

    Mrs Keron Hurlstone - Wilthshire
What a great show this morning, and continuing to listen throughout the day, great meemories of listening to "Ello Darling" and my Dad laughing, my Mum waiting for Family Favourites and me today cooking sunday lunch, laughing to Kenny Everett, and knowing all the songs, thank you Radio 2, what a lovely day and more to come,Love Keron

BRING BACK JUNIOR CHOICE!! I grew up listening to Junior Choice on Radio Two, and also Tony Blackburn's Sunday morning children's show with Arnold the dog. Nowadays, there are umpteen tv channels dedicated to children's programming but no radio. HUGE gap in the market - my 8 year old son would LOVE a children's radio show!!!!!!!(also can't wait for Family Favourite's later!! Bring that back too!!)Also used to love Sing Something Simple but that may well be a step too far!!!

Mrs. L. Tyler, Horsham, West Sussex
Just heard the show. It was brilliant. I cried at Puff the Magic Dragon, and so many memories of our child-hood came flooding back. What we want to know is, why can't Junior Choice come back permanently? Even if it was once a month or something. I'm sure alot of people think the same.If it does air again we would love to hear 'I saw a Mouse, in a Windmill in old Amsterdam.Anyway thanks again.Kindest regardsAndy & Lynda Tyler

I am celebrating by 50th birthday this weekend, and listening this morning brought back so many of my own and my children's childhood memories. Thank you. Why not produce a CD of the show and sell it to raise money for Children In Need. I am sure that it would become a bestseller! Many thanks once again for the wonderful memories the show evoked. Best wishes, Cathy

    Julia, Norwich
What a trip down memory lane!I remember writing in to you, for my sister Madeleine’s birthday. I wrote the whole request with the letters in alternate green & yellow pens (as we lived in Norwich).I asked you to play The Goodies – Funky Gibbon, which you did and we were so thrilled !!! Whenever my Spaniel, Benjie, heard "Hello Darling" he howled - even in the back of my car, which amused other motorists behind me. I am enjoying your programme and all the memories and songs, they do not make them like that any more!!

Currently listening to Stewpot bringing back wonderful memories with the songs and jingles. I was 10 in 1967 and these songs such as 'Right said Fred' and 'Three wheels on my wagon' make me rather emotional. Growing up in the 1970s, Junior Choice was part of the fabric of my life. Every Saturday morning I'd go into my Mum and Dad's bed and drink sweet tea and eat chocolate biscuits while listening to the show. I absolutely loved it. The songs I remember are "Hello Muddah Hello Faddah" by Alan Sherman, "Right Said Fred" by Bernard Cribbins and, later on, "The Ugly Duckling" by Mike Reed. I was born in 1966 (what a year!) and look back on Junior Choice as a really happy part of my life.

    Claire Feasey
I remember sitting around the radio, which was placed on top of the fridge, listending to Junior Choice - my favourite tune at that time (remember I was only 5 years old) was ' I'm a Blue Toothbrush' by Max Bygraves (am I right?). Please play it again - if not then it has to be the one about the little mouse with clogs on, well I declare, going clip, clippety clogs on the stairs!I am so looking forward to listening - I've already set the alarm in readiness and the only regret I have is not having a child of a suitable age with which to listen along with! Thanks Radio 2 for the play list to my life.Claire xx

Hello StewpotYour programme introduced youngsters like me to a whole new world of music, everything from 'In the Hall of the Mountain King to Puff the Magic Dragon'. Listening to you on Saturday morning and then I think also Sunday's, was our time with you and the music our parents did not always appreciate. It's my birthday on Oct. 19th so perhaps a dedication to a song of your choice would be much appreciated and maybe a quick burst of 'bread and butter in the gutter'!Many happy returns of the day Radio Two.

    [email protected]
We listened to Junior choice every Saturday whilst we changed the sheets and cleaned our cubicles (in the dormitory) at boarding school. We had to clean properly or the nuns wouldn't let us go out.Jacqueline

Donna Clark, Houghton-le-Spring, Tyne & Wear
I was a regular listener to your Sunday show, and I am delighted that you will be on Radio 2 once again to celebrate the stations 40th birthday. I myself was 40 in May this year, and a record of your choice for me would be fantastic.X

    Mike Atkinson, Nottingham
MOR-NINNG!So many memories of Junior Choice, including "squashed tomatoes and stew, bread and butter in the gutter", Stewpot playing "Remember You're A Womble" as an upfront white label pre-release (oh yes, Junior Choice could be hip!), and a memorable interview with The Osmonds in which Little Jimmy mistakenly referred to Ed as "Stinkpot".Big Tunes included: Sparky's Magic Piano, The Ugly Bug Ball, My Bruvver (Terry Scott), Right Said Fred (Bernard Cribbins), Hello Muddah Hello Faddah Here I Am At Camp Grenada, and "Wham Bam" by The Handley Family off Opportunity Knocks. Can't wait!BY-EEE!

I remeber listerning to the run away train and singinit in the car on holiday and getting really annoyed at sparky and his magic piano. But all the songs that featured stuck in your in head and formed an important part of growing up in the 70's.

I remember "Hello, Darling" and also a Tom Paxton song (I think) about his daughter, Kate. There was also PUff, the Magic Dragon and the runaway train and 3 wheels on my wagon - all bring back memories of listening to the radio while my Mum made pastry and Sunday lunch and Dad cleaned the car!

WHen I was a little girl in the 70s, there was nothing I liked better than Junior Choice on the radio at the weekends.Arnold the dog barking hellos to us all, and the great old "novelty" songs - Sparky, Hello Mother, Hello Father, and the terrific Terry Scott singing My Brother!I wish kids had such innocent fun thesedays - and not violent computer games, tarty Bratz dolls and provocative popstars.Oh for the days of Junior Choice in the morning and Family Favourites while Sunday lunch was being cooked!

    David Shepherd Buckley North Wales
I still have my cassettes that I taped off the air when Junior Choice was on.Favourites have to be My Brother by Terry Scott and HRH at the Olymoics by Michael Bentine. Any chance of playing either of these for my son Tom 10 and daughter Emily age 6. Hope so.Byeeeeeee

    Tim Exeter
Fabulous memories of "Stewpot". My only real experience of music in the 60s and early 70s was Junior choice. We had a large Roberts valve radio built into a home made cabinet with a reel to reel tape recorder and a record player. Every Sunday morning I would listen to "Stewpot" with the usual "Hello darling" and selection of novelty songs like "The laughing policeman" and "Right said Fred" and "Where's me shirt" and "My boomerang won't come back etc, along with some Beatles and Stones. Thanks Ed.

Jane Boddington Arundel , West Sussex
Please could you play Terry Scott 'My Brother' as this brings back lovely memories of my child hood listerning to you. I would like my dautghter to hear it as the lyrics are appropriate for her young brother

    Di Evans; Market Harborough
"Hello Darling, giggle giggle"!!the thing I remember most other than the boy quoted above was The song "Hello mother, hello father, here I am at, camp Grenada" or something similar. I used to know all the words and still remember the majority now!

    Wendy Hague - Hull
Always woke up in time to listen to Junior Choice. Remember mostly listening on a small Alba radio, which I got as a christmas present in 1974 I think, when I would have been 10. I still have the radio and it still works! Miss all those silly songs, but when I think of Junior Choice two songs spring to mind, Camp Granada by ??? and My Bruvva by Terry Scott. I'm sure when I listen on Sept 30th whatever you choose to play I'll be saying to myself "Oh yes I remember this this one." It'll be brilliant and when are you going to bring out a CD of the tunes you used to play?

Jack Rossiney 14 Moorfield Grove,Bolton Lancashire
Hello Ed, I think one of my most remembered andloved records must be"Sparky & his Magic Piano"It would be really nice Ed to hear this again,I remember this being played in sections each week as it was too long to play in it's entirity. All the very best from Jack.

    Dawn Beech Hill READING
We have both remembered many of stewpots classic junior choices, but the one that sticks out most for me is Sparky's Magic Piano. It was the very first time I heard " classical" music and as an adult it has stayed with me. I have even purchased the video to see what happened next as I never wanted the story to stop. Bring back stewpot any time. I now have children that would love him as much as I did! Happy Birthday Radio 2 & thanks for the memories.x.

    Karen Montgomery Hornchurch
I remember many years ago when I was aged 7 I was travelling to Devon for my holiday and I had sent in a request to you. I was so excited to hear the request and would like a request played today for my husband as he is at home listening to you today with a broken ankle.

    Cathie Herbert , St Albans
Whenever I hear Ed Stewart's voice I think of white bread toast with lashings of butter, slapped on with peanut butter and marmite (separately, of course)!Waking up early at the weekend, my younger brother, Richard, and I crept downstairs to listen to Ed Stewpot whilst my parents tried to have a lie-in upstairs. I don't think they ever realised just how many slices of peanut butter and marmite toast we made ourselves - we were only 10 and 3....

    Sally
Junior Choice was my introduction to radio, although the radio and Radio 2 in particular was, has and always will be on all the time in our house. Anything you play will bring back fond memories of those days as long as The Bishop family can have a "Hello Darling" really loking forward to the show and heairng you on the radio again. All the bestSally Bishop

    Judith Hawthorne, Norfolk.
My Mum, brother and I used to listen to Junior Choice every week in the 70s. I think the songs I remember most are the 'silly' ones like "3 wheels on my wagon", "Right said Fred", "I've lost my Mummy" and "The little blue man". Of course we loved the ones from the current charts too - I was madly in love with Donny Osmond and played "Twelfth of Never" over and over again!! (I finally got to meet Donny 3 years ago, by the way, at a concert in Sheffield where all us middle aged women screamed like teenagers!!!!)Anyway would love to hear one of the 'silly' songs again if possible.PS When you opened a village fete in Narborough in the 70s, I went to ask for your autograph but you were so tall you didn't even notice me, and just strode past! I remember Junior Choice so well, I have reached the big 40 this year, so I am in very good company!in my family, when we were all growing up, it was all girls, I was one of 3, my uncle had 3, and my aunty had 1, can't remember which family member wrote in, but it was played, and we all died of embarrassment but were very proud - of course the song had to be GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS - I think it was sung by Sailor!!such great memories, and of course Hello Darling and Ernie, were such memories too!I have listened to Radio 2 for so long and stil l listen, even my boys know the intro tunes now!HAPPY BIRTHDAY RADIO 2 AND ENJOY THE NEXT 40 YEARS AS I INTEND TOO!!!

    David Turner, Chatham
I was born in 1973 and remember listening to Junior Choice when I was very young. The song I remember most was a Windmill in Old Amsterdam by Ronnie Hilton and this was requested for me by my parents (and played) when I was about 3 or 4.

    Claire McG in Milton Keynes
My first introduction to David Bowie was the 'laughing gnome'. I have heard he doesn't like it played but it is a classic! If you've got it I'd love to hear it again. p.s I'm 40 in October and the birthday jingle always makes me smile I sing it to my boys at every birthday opportunity.

    Chris McCarthy
Puff the magic dragon. When you were 10 years old at the time, any thoughts of it refering to drugs were far from my mind.I don't think I've heared the song since.

I remember listening to Junior choice in bed every saturday morning before getting up and walking into the town with my friend Christine to go to the library. I must have been about 12 or 13

    Wendy - Cambridge
Does anyone remember the cassette with favourite songs from Junior Choice? It's full of those old time favourite sing a long too tunes.

    Eileen Swaisland - Bedford
A couple of m favourite songs that you used to play were Rolf Harris' - Court Of King Caractacus and and Three wheels on my Wagon. I remember being curled up in bed with my little pocket transiter radio aerial pulled all the way up trying to get the best reception. Happy days!!!!

When I think of Junior Choice two songs come to mind that nobody else seemed to play; Puff the Magic Dragon and Jake the Peg (didle didle didle-dum.It will be great to hear them again.Chris

Saturday mornings weren't complete without Junior Choice - Dad used to spend the mornings poised by the record button ready to tape those songs that I wanted. I still have that C90 cassette that's nearly as old as I am, with crackly versions of the Pink Panther, Rafferty's Motor Car and my own personal favourite - 'My Brother'. I turned 40 myself earlier this year and dad is no longer with us, so all i would need to do is close my eyes and it would take me back to those days. So here's hoping..Happy 40th BirthdayElaine

My Brother Paul and I would get into our Parents bed and listen on the old 'Roberts'radio. We loved them all but the classics like 'My Brother', 'Hello Mother..'and 'The Ugly Duckling' particularly. I still sing them to my children to his day...can'y wait for Sunday.

    Stuart, Croydon
It was the only days I wanted to get up early. straight to the radio and that 'Hello darling'. I think Camp Granada was, and still is,a masterpiece. pity it ended, but I suppose evolution continues- from Charlie Drake to Transformers on the telly. I've got all the old songs and my kids and their frieands love them now- so perhaps the format is more enduring than we think.

    Steve Knight, Halstead, Essex
Make sure you include "Camp Granada" and the barking dog!

    Wendy Rice, Gloucestershire
We were great fans of the show in our family. I remember my mum deciding to send a request for my brother Andrew's 4th or 5th birthday. As he used to carry around a small, knitted bear, Mum and I spent ages decorating postcards with pictures of bears (more than one to get us noticed!) and the request to hear "Me and my Teddy Bear" on the day of Andrew's birthday. We did not tell him as we thought it would be a great surprise. We listened avidly all through the programme, waiting for the request to be read out .....but it never was! Ted has been relagated to the loft now but I am sure the song will still bring back memories to the rest of the Brown family of Mortimer.

Hi EdThe biggest memory of the show that I have is as young lad in the late sixties and early seveties, going on holiday to Abersoch in North Wales (where we still go today). We used to go a few times a year and on what seemed to be every trip down there (as I remember it now anyway!) on the radio on your show were Cliff Richard - Summer Holiday or The New Christie Minstrels - Three Wheels on My Wagaon, we used to sing along in the car, no seat belts on, probably sat on my mums knee with the car packed with clothes and food (frightening when you think now). When we used to listen to your show on a sunday evening, your voice and some of the songs you played brought back fantastic memories of great sun filled care free holidays! It would be great to hear either of these again as they became our family's holiday anthems!Take care and have a great show, really looking forward to hearing some nostalgia!Kind regardsRoger Trueman in Derby

I use to love Junior Choice especially "Hello Darling" I can remember listening in near my birthday hoping for a mention but sadly it never happened, great days.If you could play something from the Glam days it would be great anything by Sweet would be good

When I was young, we didn't have a TV and Mother had the radio all day. I was born in 1948.My Mother was always singing. My favourite memory is in the mornings, after Dad had gone to work, when Mum used to sing songs to us whilst we cuddled into her on her old iron bed that had an old feather mattress. The songs I remember most are PERRY COMO's 'Catch a falling star', Max Bygraves' I'm a Pink toothbrush and another of his songs with the following words - The sun is a big yellow duster, polishing the blue blue sky.I would love to hear the last one if it can be found!!Junior Choice was a highlight. The songs that told stories were just wonderfull - like Sparky the piano player. My Mother will be celebrating her 80th birthday on October 18th. I would love for her to hear this request and for you to let her know that I love her dearly. It will bring back so many great memories. Many thanks Jacquie Wiffen - formerly Jacqueline Haynes. I live in Devizes Wiltshire now, but when a child - lived in New Addington, Surrey, between Westerham and Croydon.

HI Ed, Do you remember me, I used to write my requests out with a different colour for every letter and never missed getting one played over many years, We had a young family when radio 2 started all those years ago and I put in requests for all birthdays and wedding anniversaries. Our first request all those years ago was for "Puff the Magic Dragon" for our sons birthday and just for old times sake would love to hear it again. ( He's 45 now) Were the 1960s and 1970s such a golden time as my memory would have me believe ? With fondest memories of joyous tmes gone bye. love jeanette.

I was born in 63 and the memory of Junior choice just takes me straight back to a wonderful childhood with my Mum and Dad - Rosemary and George Curtis and my brothers Rob and Neil. We all loved Stewpot and Hello Darling! and it will be great to hear him again

Guy Loveridge - Emley - West Yorkshire
I well remember the original "Junior choice" - especially on a holiday on the Isle of wight in 1976 - the year of the great long hot summer and bush fires around the UK. We were, as a family, in "digs" in Freshwater Bay, and i recall lying in th eheat, waiting for a request to come on, as it was my 7th Birthday - but it was not played! Turns out my Mum had not sent it off! Whoops! Still - always enjoyed the show!

    Liz Jones, Whitstable
Along with my siblings, Terri and Mike, I was a huge fan of the show. We particularly liked Terry Scot's 'My Bruvver', that Bernard Cribbens record about digging a hole and the Sparky record featuring the 'talking' electronic piano. My personal favourite was Camp Granada (if that's what it's called). I knew all the words by heart, even if I didn't know what all the Americanisms meant. Have to add that my most loathed record was 'There's a hole in my bucket' - it seemed to go on forever. Needless to say, I am really looking forward to Stewpot's anniversary show!

    Angela Norman Marlborough Wiltshire
Please can you play Day-O - my brother and I always listened to Stewpot on Saturday mornings and particularly loved the 'I come through the window' bit at the end of this song. Our other favourites were 'My Brother' and 'Right Said Fred' which I am sure you couldn't get through the show without playing! Thanks - Angela

I can't wait for this programme. It was one of my happiest childhood memories, sat in the kitchen at home. I would love to hear "My Brother" or "Camp Granada" or "Sparky and His Magic Piano"
