Led Zeppelin -
Led Zeppelin IV

Though technically untitled, the album known as Led Zeppelin IV was released in November 1971. It is one of the best-selling albums in history, having sold 23million copies in the states alone, and is perhaps best known in popular culture for featuring the classic Stairway to Heaven.

In choosing this record as a masterpiece, Zane said "as far as live musicians were concerned, they were out of this world ... their records are a true reflection of that chemistry".

We want to know how this album has touched your life. Maybe it got you into music, or encouraged you to pick up a guitar or start writing lyrics. What memories have you got of the first time you heard this album, and what effect has it had on you?

Read what others have said..

I remember sneaking into my dads record collection and finding this, i started listening to it quite often, then he caught me going into his 'prize possesions' thought i was in for it, no need to worry he was so glad i had discovered led zeppelin, i know he was proud.
Terry, Manchester

I bought this on cd last year after not having heard it for a very long time. I have to say I had forgotten just how good they were and what a great album this is.
Trevor, Bristol

This is my era, I was 13 in 71 and trying to be the singer in a band with some mates. Truly bad of course, BUT, we listened to this as it came out. Along with Made In Japan by Deep Purple (the live album recorded in Japan)and the first Black Sabbath album, this stuff really affected me, music was my life then. Later I saw loads of bands, mainly at hammersmith odeon, but I never saw Zeppelin live. I still regret it.Great choice Zane
Jon, Cornwall

Got into this truelly amazing and inspiring band through a friend when i was 18 and 15 years on i am yet to here a band that even come close to their genius......Truelly gutted i havn't got tickets to their one off gig. But will always cherish seing plant and page at glastonury in 1995.....
Alvin London

I remember having Zep parties in the early 80's when we played nothing but Zep all weekend (between us we owned all their albums), Awesome band! Sadly I wasn't so into them when they were still together & I gave a ticket to Knebworth back to the friend who gave it me because I went hitching round France instead - DERRR!!! lol... I even went to see Tesla the night Zane did this show (their cover of Thank You is tear-jerking!). Rock On Zep!
Tone F Nottingham

They made me realise what music was. Never has a band manged to play both English folk/rock and American Blues/rock so well and done it on so many ablums at teh same time.Live, when they were good they were musical gods, when it was bad they were dire, Jimmy was perhaps the shaping influence and the main factor in this brilliant/ugly performance thing. Saw Plant at Glastonbury it was brill, Saw Page and plant at Glastonbury and it was iffy, LZ is like many thing from the seventies when it worked it was heaven sent and you were glad to be alive, when they were bad you just failed to remember.
Jeremy, Essex

Heard it for the first time 20 years ago and tonight it sounds better than ever. The older you get the more timeless it is...
BF, Warwick

Led Zeppelin are quite simply the greatest rock band ever. This album is the best possible example of a band that mixed folk, rock, blues and even eastern music. and who hasnt heard stairway. beautiful
Jeff York

My best memories from 6th form and University all have a backdrop of Led Zep. It seemed that every party started with the lung bursting "Rock and Roll" and ended with "Stairway to Heaven".The BBC should put the movie "The song remains the same" on TV, I think the plan is to reissue the DVD before Christmas.
Chris Cambridge

Brilliant album most bands have peaked by their third album but not Led zep . Their other albums aren't far behind this in terms of quality either.
Gary Norwich

I've been raised on Zeppelin since birth in '89, but somehow lost touch with them during my pre-teen Spice Girls craze...... until Led Zepp IV [untitled] hit me with a bang two years ago, and since I haven't gone a day without playing one of their records. My band even does a cover of Rock and Roll!!To top it off, Dad and I have tickets to the Achmed Ertegun tribute gig!! This event's just something I always desperately hoped would happen, and I'm completely ecstatic that it is!!This album is THE ultimate masterpiece album.
Emma, Derry

Zeppelin IV brought my wife and I together. We met at a Zep concert and fell in love to stairway to heaven. Without this album and this terrific band I would have my beautiful family today. This album runs deep within my soul.
Ryan - Ohio, USA

Heck! I missed the programme but am compelled to write. I love Led Zep IV (from Battle of Evermore to Rock 'n Roll), having first listened to it in my mid teens, I then became hooked and saw them at Knebworth in 1979. Their music is like wine - gets better with age! Now in my 40's and still loving every album and absolutely gutted that I was unsuccessful in the ballot for tickets. Roll on Zep.
Lisa, Macclesfield

Rock on Led Zep!!!! R.I.P 'Bonzo'Bonham.
Nick .Hastings

Congratulations to Radio1 and Zane for choosing this album. As Bono said in the interview on the show "Led Zep, no one can touch them!". They truly were four musical geniuses. It is often overlooked how massive this band were, and the respect they command particularly in the states. Rock on Jimmy Page
TBone, Wycombe

talk about the hairs on the back of your neck standing up, plants voice makes every hair on my body stand up! I dont think there will ever be a band like this again. I only got into them a few years ago and I went to the same school as john bonham!viva redditch
D redditch

Led Zeppelin? The best from the best :-) I'm only 18, but I've already heard almost every their song, thx for a really good music in your radio.
Dominika, Poland

I sat with the biggest glass of Drambuie you have ever seen and sang along to every note. Happy days!!!!
Lesley, Fife

So many people talk about this Album "touching their lives" I was at the right age at the right time and who would have thought that anyone would have been saying that about the 70's. We were told that we lived in a musical desert... so we had to suffer the Bay City Rollers, doesn't every decade! Well the album touched my life again last night. Suffering raging toothache all night I found it here and listened to it twice. I almost (I did say almost) forgot my toothache!
John, Cheddar

I've always wanted to get into listening to Led Zeppelin as i know they're one of the greatest bands ever, but had never actually sat down and listened to any of their albums the whole way through, until last nights show. Now I'm 100% converted and shall be buying a couple of the albums this weekend, thanks Zane, top choice masterpieces all week!
Marcus - Leeds

I first heard Zep when I was 12 - It was a trip in my brother's car and he was playing the Song Remains the same live album, I just couldn't beleive this incredible loud, dirty music and soaring voice coming at me from the speakers, I was pinned to the seat and my obsession had started. My school friends were into Bros and Rick Astley - no one understood! How wonderful to listen last night to a band that means so much to me and be sharing it with so many other people. It was like hearing it again for the first time - a truly great event. Thank you :-)
Clare P, Reading

Briliant! Just briliant!! I only have the 'best off' double album of the Zep and thought that would do me, it wont! I'll be 'acquiring' all their albums now. Rock & Roll the way it should be! Black Dog and Rock & Roll are simply bliss! In order to experience real good, smelly, filthy, blasting, rythmical, rock & roll we have to look back to this era. It's so much better than the cold boring 'guitar' bands of today.
Big Chris, Ireland

I've been listening to Zeppelin since 1968 when I was a mere 13 yrs old. I enjoy their music now more than ever, and like others (above) have said, there is no other band to touch them and never will be. I met Robert once in Sainsbury's and we talked for a few minutes about some of the post-1980 albums he had made with Jimmy. (Robert's latest album is superb, by the way!) My daughter told me the album was on Radio 1 and I am delighted to know that the younger generation are being turned on to this great music. Long live Zep!
Jan, Worcester

First heard IV in my bedroom in 1972 and was completely blown away. Music must excite the senses and emotions and this album runs the gamut and still blows me away at 50. Without doubt one of the best albums ever made. Not a negative comment thus far which says it all. TQ Zane for playing it in full, lets hope it inspires the current generation as it inspired me.
Nigel, Antalya

Thank you ... I have not listened to this in such a long time and it brings backs floods of memories as a teenager in London in late 70s and University in Birmingham 80-83 !! Great times and lovely to see them enjoyed still by everyone.
Adrian - Ottawa, Canada

Ah, memories! My 5th Form year at school, my first motorcycle, my 101st Embassy fag, and dear sweet Penny P, my first serious girlfriend. Every track here reminds me of one of those precious moments in life, now gone forever..thank you Led Zep for continually bringing them back to mind! (but how about a few more gigs after the O2 event???)
Steve B, Milton Keynes

Greatest band ever , I was 15 when they played Knebworth and my parents wouldn't let me go snd of course I didn't get tickets for the Dome . Have to be honest and say I probably prefer Physical Graffiti but IV is a brilliant showcase of the bands diversity and of course its got that song on it hasn't it. But if I am to pick out a standout track its got to be When the Levee Breaks . Whatever music I get into I always come back to Zeppelin nobody does Rock Music better and no Rock band does acoustic music better.
Chris R , Lincoln

I'm goin' the o2!I've waited 20 years for this!YEAHHHHHHH BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!Gonna be one hell of a party...........
Dave, Telford

Led Zeppelin at Knebworth...Awesome gig, life-changing. With every Zep album in the cupboard it's hard to pick a favourite but I reckon IV shades it. (or maybe II, or Houses of The Holy, etc etc etc)
Graham, Epsom

In a 100 years time when we're all long gone kids will still be listening to Zeppelin and wondering about how it came to be.Fantastic stuff.ps My favourite is actually "Houses Of The Holy" which was realised after Zep IV.
Mark - Sheffield

Its been a long time since...Seriously, well done for bringing Zep to a new generation; my eleven year old has them on his Ipod/Phone thing.Brilliant.
Mike, Oswestry

Led Zep bends all time and space to a motionless expanse. Their style of playing is unique and the affect they have had on myself and millions of others shows how much they have had an impact. Their music tells the story of something special and something great and i dont think they will ever be forgotten.
Greg, Norwich

gosh that brought back some memories. i am 46, was only 10 when it was released, but it was standard fare in our house. I saw them at a festival a few years later (don't remember which one, we went to so many) but this is the nearest i've come to hearing it in such good quality. thanks for sending me back there, it was magical. our stereo was rubbish at the time, so hearing it like this took me back to that muddy feild, and fighting with my mum to stay up and get closer to the stage. I brought her some food back to make up for disappearing. it could have been bickershaw, isle of wight (that would have been 71, no) or anywhere??Will buy it tomorrow, and talk to my mum to find out more.reply to PH, it blew me away, and NO drugs either. it did again tonight.Stumbled upon. Thank You 50 times (at least).David
david finan hyde manchester

wow! good to hear led zepp on the radio again, this is one of the best albums ever, listen in headphones, theres so much going on,,,,,,,,,, LED ZEPPELIN ROCK,, hey i got the four symbols tattoed on my left arm, peace
Alan, Hull

what can i say, zep's 4th!....now u have to listen to the other 10!!!!!
andy,herts

I can't even remember the first time I heard "IV". I must have been about 10 (1975) and staying with my cousins near Knebworth. It's just always been there as the best. When I was a student I had a poster of the lyrics to Stairway to Heaven on my wall. All my life! Thanks!
Mark, Cardiff

One listen to the songs on this album it's almost impossible to put them out of your mind and pretend that you’ve never heard them…you’d be lying to yourself!I know for certain that they will stay with me for the rest of my life. Most of the songs I've heard but some are new to me. True, there are other great rock albums out there that are compiled of some great songs but on this particular album Led Zeppelin’s unique sound, and the feeling you get when you listen to this sound place them beyond greatness. To me, their ability to touch on a wide range of human emotions with an amplified or acoustic sound, a lyric, or an infectious drum beat (and mostly all of these combined) only affirm how multi-dimensional they are."Stairway to Heaven" is undisputedly an all time classic song but "when the Levee Breaks" just hits the nail on the head for me; it rocks so hard, has the most banging drum beat I've ever heard and combined with Robert Plants scream like soulful chorus, it never fails to help me forget life's woes and put a big smile on my face.Zane, you’re a legend for putting this album out on the airwaves for everyone to listen to!
Nav Chohan, London

Led Zep IV is an album that stands the test of time with ease, it's simpley an amazing bit of music start to finish. This popping on radio 1 today made work actually bearable!
Phil, Dunstable

That took me back to somewhere great - good times and happy days. I listened to the show, and just listened to it again on the web. Can't wait for Radiohead in the next series.
Zoe Huxtable, Southampton

Was introduced to Led Zep by my mate Henry and for that I am always grateful. The album has everything that you can musically wish for and the epic stairway covers all of the bases in its own right (lyrics, pace, melody, drums, guitar, vocals, intensity). It builds up and crescendos better than any other song in the world.
Burt, Towcester

So many memories I was 16 just started my 1st job in london got tickets to see Zepplin at Wembley 11th November. Fantastic concert bought the album there. Not only have I still got the album (still play it)but I stil have my tickets which I reguarly show people when the conversation gets round to who you saw in concert when you were young and now what joy listening in full to the album on my headphones whilst working. Good on you radio 1 the music you play is inspiring for all ages long may you reign.
lynne Smeeton - Essex

The greatest British band ever. When I was 15 (1984) I went to a party hosted by a classmates older brother. I was introduced to Led Zep and Iron Maiden. I went out on the Monday after school and bought Led Zep IV. Life just got so much better after that. Definitely pivotal in my life and I'm sure in many other people's lives.
Rod, Edinburgh

Led Zeppelin are and always will be the greatest band that ever set foot on this planet. Every album they ever made is a masterpiece in my eyes. Rock and roll died September 25th 1980. RIP John Bonham. when the clouds thunder we know it's you behind the kit.
Dan. Forest of Dean

Haven't listened to this for so long, now I realise how much I've been missing it. Makes me feel like laughing, dancing, singing; every single track - brilliant, thanks Zane.
Nettie Hastings

What other band could mix acoustic folk, blues and rock on one album. From the dynamic power tracks of Black Dog and Rock and Roll to the fireside folksongs of Going to California and the Lord of the Rings inspired Battle of Evermore. Then throw everthing together and come up with Stairway. Page the riff meister and Plant the man with the million dollar voice what an awesome front end with a rythm section second to none. Pure magic from the best individuals in the rock world. There will never be another Led Zeppelin.
Ken M - Stourbridge

Brilliant truly brilliant. It sounds a little dramatic but this album shaped parts of my life in many, many ways.
Mike, Manchester

The thought that so many of us enjoying the same extrodinary album at the same time and all missing where the drums come in on 'Stairway' at the same time rocks.
Matt, Leicester

That was wicked :-) Stairway to heaven, tune nr. 4 if I remember rightly on a mix tape (Tribute to the 'erb # 3), which we created at Uni in around 1993 - Happy days!
Ed Zachery III Jr - Munich

4 of the greatest musicians ever. They changed rock music through blues, folk and eastern influences. It's often forgotten in the U.K just how huge this band was worldwide. 300 million record sales are living proof. Jimmy, Robert, John and John Paul are GODS!!!!
Colin, Torrevieja, Spain

Every song reflects all the different shades of rock music. It still sounds awesome. The production and songwriting demonstrate the greatest rock band of all time firing on all cylinders. Indespensable.
Kai, Leeds

I remember listening to LZIV when a few freinds and I spent a month driving from San Francisco to San Diago in a camper. It was summer on the pacific coast highway, listening to going to california in big sur - a true moment. Thanks for tonight.
Robbie, North of England

no one can touch them for musical brilliancenew bands out there take note!!!
scott ayrshire

Louise ,Salisbury

Not are Led Zeppelin the greatest band ever but you have demonstrated that you are the greatest dj. Four excellent albums and having Led Zep IV at the end is just the cherry on the cake. Thanks.
kevin, northampton

My Uncle played this album to me twenty years ago and it inspired and motivated me to learn the guitar. I got to play one of my first gigs on one of the smaller stages at Glastonbury in 1995 after seeing Page and Plant; it was a magical day for me. Unfortunately I never got to see the original line up. This is album is full of fantastic sounds and textures and continues to inspire a new generation. It deserves a special place in music history and I'm glad Radio 1 is paying tribute to one of the best British rock albums of all time.
M.Watkins Devizes

Its great to finally see and hear Led Zeppelin on the radio, I've been waiting for so long greatest band ever.
Ashiv, Croydon

Led zep! What Can I say. Fab Album, Fab Band, whos looking forward to December 10th (Cause I am!!!)
Stephen, Chorley

Reminds me of the best ever Chris Moyles show when he was stuck in traffic on the way back from Leeds. Mark and Lard filled in for 15mins. They claimed they hadn't prepared anything and so they played Stairway To Heaven .... twice.
Anthony - Porthcawl

Excellent choice. I've just found out that you were playing this and swapped back from Radio 2!! Led Zep's work was the music of choice in our sixth form in the early 70's. Amazing that it's still head and shoulders above a lot of today's offerengs. PS got any spare tickets for the gig?
Karl, Coventry

may '75 - earls court: THE voice, THE guitars and john bonham's synthesized drum kit merging into a sound that never ages - the tracks on IV will always be the most creative ever recorded by any rock band anywhere
chris - taunton

I saw Led Zeppelin three times live. Twice at the Colston Hall in Bristol and then the last ever gig in England (at Knebworth)that John Bonham played at before he died. They were amazing then and listening to them now brings it all back as though it was yesterday. The quality of their music and their ability to master so many styles makes this an amazing choice. Rock on Led Zep.
Mike, Hockley in Essex

Zeppelin always fill me with such wonderful warm feelings - my love of music as a whole statred with them and 'Bonus Pastor' secondary school band such TALENT zeppelin fathered x Mark Dalley lives on in all the hearts of Bonus Pastor an avid fan of Zeppelin cut short in is prime he would have been an assett to the music world x

Jimmy page robert plant john paul jones thankyou love and respect BONGO BERT
bongo bert

You could put any Led Zep album in a legendary catagory. They are that damm good!
Sam Manchester

It's all there. Zeppelin shifting 5 gears on one album and being totally at home in each gear. I can't think of another band that can go from Black Dog to Battle Of Evermore so effortlessly. They even manage it on ONE song (Stairway). Trully, Led Zeppelin were the one band that defied being pigeonholed. This was the album that cemented their postition as the world's greatest band. They had already reached that lofty peak via Zep I, II and III but this album was the one that trully kept their flag flying higher than all their peers and rivals. I didn't discover this album until almost 20 years after it's release but I immediately knew it was better than anything I had ever heard before.
Robert, Isle of Wight

A work of pure, pure genius. Each and every time I start listening to it, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I get that sudden goosebump feeling throughout my body. Not many albums have that effect on me! Each track is so different and special but yet they all combine to produce an overall feeling of ecstasy. This appeals to the many current generations and will continue to do so forever, of that I have no doubt. I remember first listening to my brother's copy of this album when I was 12 years old thinking it was going to be crap because it didn't even have a title and I was more into The Jam, but it blew me away! Looking forward to listening to it on the radio which I have never done before.
DK, NI

Undoubtedly a classic album but not my favourite by Led Zep - if (like me) you prefer the heavier tracks then check out Physical Graffitti and for the mellow music lovers Led Zep III is probably yr best bet. IV is alot of peoples introduction to Zeppelin because it has "Stairway" on it and it demonstrates the wide range of musical streams they tapped into, from the melodic "Going to California", the ground shaking "When the levee breaks" and the almost manic "Rock'n'Roll" (concentrate on Bonhams drumming, the tempo is phenomenal, makes your arms ache just imagining hitting the skins at the pace and ferocity he manages). That it is still finding new fans 36 years after its release is testament to the 4 members musical prowess...... Led Zeppelin-often copied but never bettered!
David - Ipswich

i love zep they meeen so much in my life and im only 15 but am amazed by the music
jamie wilkins cannock

No matter how old you are or what your music taste is, listen to Led Zep and I guarantee they will blow you away! I only started listening to them this year (I am young) and I've become obsessed with them. The brilliant vocal range of Robert Plant, the thunderous and also elegant guitar riffs and solos of one of the true greats of guitar Jimmy Page, the awesome bass of John Paul Jones, and the stomping drums which could be recognized anywhere of the late John Bonham. What a mix which is pulled off in style!Led Zeppelin are a force to be reckoned with and their music will last an eternity
PH

Is it wrong to say I prefer Led Zep 1?
Ian, Oxford

led zep changed my life !! xxxxxxxxxxx
Chelsie, Peterborough

I think with the stairway to heaven Led Zep goes in the sky and we too!
Bernard BOUVRY Munich Germany

What an album Zep 4 is.It must have been a long discussion trying to pick between Zep 1 - 4 and Physical Graffiti. When asked my favourite i can never decide, it depends what kinda mood i'm in, they are all masterpieces. Apart from the obvious "Stairway", Zep 4 has 2 of my favourite Led Zeppelin tracks, those being "Going to California" with its acoustic folk sound and the stomping dirty blues of "When the Levee breaks" I love the way Zeppelin change the pace effortlessly throughout this album and still maintain a seamless organic flow making this a true example of the art of album making and not just a collection of good songs, there is a big difference. Top choice Zane i cant wait to hear the whole album played on radio 1 and for anyone reading this who has never heard Zeppelin, tune in because Zep will change your life!!!
Scott S - Glasgow

One of my all favourites, a true masterpiece
John, Peterborough
