TOTP: You don't look too Christmassy, Steve. Steve: You know what, it’s just moving too fast. Maybe I need to get a grip. Maybe I just need a few days. Just a couple of days. I just feel a little out of my depth. It’s all happened so fast. I’m so used to a different style of life, that this style of life is difficult to come to terms with. Maybe I just need a good night’s sleep.
TOTP: How was your performance tonight? Steve: Aw, I messed up big time. That was the biggest crowd I’ve ever played in front of. By a mile! And they were screaming. There was a lot of distractions. It threw me. I’ve got to get used to that quickly. Because there’s going to be a lot of time when I’m going to sing that I need to focus.
TOTP: You seemed to win them over, did that make you feel a bit better when you came offstage? Steve: Yeah well, when I’ve done my gigs, in a pub or a club. I like to do a gig that’s two and a half hours long and come off feeling that I sang really well. So when I come off and I don’t think I did my best, that’s what disappoints me, because I don’t want people to think that I’m not that good.
TOTP: So what time did you party till last night? Steve: My big regret was that after the show I was given glasses of Champagne and I partied with my family. I enjoyed it, I enjoyed the moment and we stayed up till about three or four O’ clock. I am absolutely cream-crackered. I’ve had about four hours sleep. I was up early this morning. I’ve done radio interviews. I’ve lost count of all the things I’ve done today.
TOTP: You got booed a bit when you first came on, how did you feel about that? Steve: I’m not appealing to a lot of people here. I don’t think I appeal to a lot of younger people. I did see groups in the crowd that were enjoying it though.
TOTP: Do you think that they might have booed because they thought that last night was rigged? Steve: No not at all. Well, maybe there was some G4 fans, Tabby fans, Rowetta fans.
TOTP: So you’re hoping your career is going to be more Will Young than Michelle McManus? Steve: All I want to do is do a really good album.
TOTP: Are you doing an album of covers? Steve: I don’t think it’s going to be an album of covers. If it’s an album of covers, I’ll be amazed.
TOTP: Have you seen the likes of Kylie and Jamelia tonight? Steve: I’ve just been flying around. I’ve not seen anyone really. All I want is to do my best, do a good album, and hope that people like it. I’m going to get criticism, I know I am, but I just want to do my thing.
