Reporter Profiles

Greg Dawson

Greg Dawson

Broadcast journalist

Where are you from?
Born in South Africa but spent most of my life in Manchester.

What were you doing before Radio 1?
Working in local radio in Coventry and before that in regional TV news in Manchester.

Best part of the job?
The variety - the different places you go and the different people you meet.

Worst on air moment?
I had the stupid idea of eating crisps just before reading a news bulletin...a few went down the wrong way and I spent the three minutes spluttering into the microphone.

Advice to anyone who wants to get started in journalism:
Try to get loads of experience, have a lot of patience and be prepared to work very hard.

Where would you like to be in 10 years' time?
Seeing the world and getting up when I want.

What's on your walls at home?
Photos of friends and a map of the world.

Who would you most like to interview?
I'd love to have a chat with Arsene Wenger and set him the challenge of not saying the words "spirit" or "belief" for the whole interview.

My top three albums ever are:
Hard to narrow my favourites down but they include...
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
The Killers - Hot Fuss
Bent - Ariels

Who's your favourite news reporter and why?
The BBC's Washington Correspodent Matt Frei. He's annoyingly good at coming up with memorable phrases that make his reports stick in your mind.

I spend my time off:
Catching up with friends.

If wasn't a news reporter I'd be...
A chef on a cruise ship.
