New Bohemia presents:
Bugz in the Attic live
DJ Food and DK
Herbaliser (DJ Set)
Bugz in the Attic is an all-star broken beat crew of DJs and producers based in West London -- a collective that includes (but isn't limited to) Afronaught, Seiji, Daz-I-Kue, Kaidi Tatham, Mark Force, and Alex Phountzi. Whether alone, together, or involved in their many splinter projects and one-offs, the members of Bugz in the Attic have likely played a role in well over half (if not a higher percentage) of the releases that can be categorized as broken beat. The group has also run its own Co-Op club night and the Bitasweet label as well, which has been an outlet for some of their involvements and interests, including the Phuturistic Dancin' anthologies, Seiji's Remixes compilation, and Dego McFarlane's releases as Cousin Cockroach. In late 2003, they made their contribution to the Fabriclive series of mix discs.
With a seemingly single DJ name, it is often wrongly assumed that DJ Food is single person. In fact, a whole host of DJs, producers and musicians have performed under the name, so the evolutionary nature of the DJ Food sound comes as no surprise. Matt Black and Jonathan Moore (aka Coldcut) were responsible for starting Jazz Brakes series in the early 90s. Along the way they met Patrick Carpenter, who, being listed on the liner notes simply by his initials, was often mistakenly thought to be a Personal Computer. A loose collaborative team began to form as more like-minded people arrived at the party, including Paul Brook, Paul Rabiger, Strictly Kev and Issac Elliston. Although keeping their hand in as DJs on the albums, Matt & Jon couldn't perform DJ sets twice in one night under both aliases of Coldcut & DJ Food, so they handed the mantle of live DJing over to PC and Strictly Kev.
DJ, music maker, radio producer and presenter, Darren Knott (alias DK) is a key component in the Ninja Tune live shows and one of the main driving forces behind the legendary 'Solid Steel' radio show. A frequent visitor to the New York music scene, DK rates this as being a great influence along with a grounding in London's club history. Extensive travel and committed 'diggin in the crates' enabled a large and diverse collection of records to be amassed from different countries, which is reflected in his selection of tunes. His Djing style is an eclectic mix from Jazz induced beats to Drum & Bass, Hip Hop, funky breaks and beyond, trying to avoid a night of just one style of music and leaving room for both the latest tunes and classic rarities.
The Herbaliser are one of the more purely hip-hop oriented acts on Ninja Tune's roster of sample-based pocket-funk. Combining deft, mid-tempo beats, well-chosen jazz and funk figures, sparse scratching, and even the odd rap, Herbaliser bridge the gap between dusty B-side instrumental hip-hop and London's new school of psychotropic beat scientists. Formed by Ollie Teeba and Jake Wherry in the early '90s, Herbaliser trace their roots to jazz and funk as well as old-school hip-hop.

Name: The Hoosiers & Dragonette
Venue: Mine, Leeds University Union
Town: Leeds
Line Up/Details:
You may not know The Hoosiers by name, but you may well have already heard their debut single, Worried About Ray, the first single from forthcoming debut album Mr. A due out in September. An effervescent slab of power pop, it has been bothering the charts and receiving radio play in abundance, helped in no small measure by a quirky video that pays tribute to Oscar-winning Jason and The Argonauts animator Ray Harryhausen.
The Hoosiers are, Irwin Sparkes, Alfonso Sharlando and Martin Skarendahl, long time friends who have united to bring us their unique brand of odd-pop, which their myspace proclaims to sound like “XTC, Supertramp, Talking Heads, Sinitta and a set of rusty spoons cling-clanging their way through the britches of Jeff Buckley.” From Exeter, Reading and Stockholm, The Hoosiers have definitely got the right elements to draw interest from an audience over-saturated with guitar driven pop.
Support comes from Dragonette, a Canadian-British band who have provided support for Duran Duran and Basement Jaxx among others. Their Dragonette EP caught the ears of many, and this band have been named as ones to watch in 2007 by none other than the heir to Smash Hits’ crown, Pop Justice.
