Line up / Master Shortie

Introduction

Theo Kerlin is a 19-year-old artist who goes by the name of Master Shortie and plays by his own rules. Shortie's been recording raps since he was 12 and he studied at the Brit School (home also to Adele, Amy Winehouse and Kate Nash), before dropping out because it didn't suit him.

It's difficult to pigeonhole Master Shortie. He's not your straight-forward MC. As he says himself, "with the youths of today, if you're an indie kid you're an indie kid, if you're a grime kid you're a grime kid...Whereas me, I'm dodging in and out of different crowds."

He's very much a self-made man. "I can do everything myself, promoting myself via the web to putting out my tracks to getting my stuff onto websites," he says, "so, what do I need a record label for?" His fashion style is his own, too. You'll see him rocking indie-kid skinny jeans with baseball caps, and pulling it off.

In May, he's on tour supporting The King Blues (also appearing at Radio 1's Big Weekend) and Cut Chemist. He was born in Swindon, but moved to South London with his family when he was six, so Radio 1's Big Weekend will be a homecoming. Expect big things.
