Kwan Pun Leung - The Image Creator of Nature
In the Studio takes us into the minds and processes of leading and emerging figures from across the creative world.
Kwan is a visionary cinematographer whose work embodies a profound fusion of Eastern spirituality and artistic sensitivity. Unlike the stereotypical, technically driven cinematographers, Kwan approaches his craft as an energy-based practice deeply rooted in the philosophy - collaborating with nature itself. He believes that cinematography transcends technical precision, instead channeling the unconscious energy of a scene through intuitive openness.
Training in hypnosis has sharpened his understanding of the unconscious forces that move audiences. He emphasises the cinematographer’s role as a conduit: by remaining receptive and protecting their energy, especially in challenging environments, they can translate raw emotional currents into compelling visuals. His collaborations with directors like Wong Ka Wai and Ann Hui, highlight his adaptability; with Wong, he navigates ambiguity, co-creating meaning through improvisation rather than rigid plans.
Kwan reimagines the role of cinematographer as one of quiet attunement, where the camera becomes a vehicle for the soul. His belief is that the most enduring images are born not from control, but from surrender to the moment’s unspoken language.
