Timaya
Timaya, a Nigerian singer dubbed the 'king of Afro-soca', tells DJ Edu how he's built a long-lasting career.
Timaya from Nigeria blends dancehall, Afrobeats, and hip-hop with the Caribbean vibes of ragga, and soca music. His first hit, Dem Mama, was in 2005; his 2021 song Cold Outside, a collaboration with fellow Nigerian BNXN, has been streamed millions of times around the world.
As he tells TIA, he started out promoting his songs by knocking on people's doors and introducing himself and his music. He’s come a long way since then; dubbed the 'king of Afro-soca' music, he’s won, or been nominated for, many awards, including a Grammy. His new album is set to drop later this year.
