As One 1820 and Solo's Beat
DJ Edu showcases artists from Guinea Bissau and Sierra Leone, and the 10-in-10 mix has 10 of the freshest tunes from across the Motherland.
As One 1820 is a rapper and singer from Guinea-Bissau who has gone out of his way – quite literally – to search for musical inspiration. Raised in a village as part of the Fula tribe, he has toured other remote rural locations to engage with the locals, mixing their musical traditions and styles with his own modern beats.
He tells DJ Edu why he decided to stop writing songs that were critical of his home country, and how music has helped him achieve his childhood ambition of becoming a pilot – without ever having to climb in a cockpit.
Solo’s Beat is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer from Sierra Leone whose debut album is causing a stir. Entitled Joanna, it is dedicated to his baby daughter and his late mother, who both share the name, and is a celebration of African life.
