Buruntuma and Afroto

DJ Edu chats to Buruntuma, a DJ from Guinea-Bissau who's bringing African sounds to European dancefloors, and Afroto, one of a new generation of rappers finding success in Egypt.

Buruntuma describes himself as a “storyteller lost in Lisbon”, having moved to Europe from Guinea-Bissau as a teenager. Now a successful afro-house DJ, he aims to maintain the tradition of his nation's griot musicians, ancient guardians of knowledge and history who pass on their wisdom through song. He tells DJ Edu how a love of 90s house music got him hooked on electronica and why his adopted home in the Portuguese capital is a little piece of Africa in Europe.

Afroto is one of a new generation of rappers finding success in Egypt. The scene now dominates streaming services that are popular with young people while its artists are being asked to write music for things like adverts and movies. With a name that translates as "little genie", he explains to TIA what is so magical about his own brand of eastern-flavoured trap.
