EU to phase out Russian natural gas imports

The EU seeks to end its energy dependence while boosting support for Ukraine.

The European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, has said a deal to phase out EU imports of Russian gas by 2027 marks the dawn of a new era. The move is designed to cut Russian revenues that fund the war against Ukraine. We speak to our Europe expert in the newsroom.

The Kremlin says its wrong to suggest Vladimir Putin rejected US proposals for peace with Ukraine during talks on Tuesday. Ukraine says it's been told by President Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, that there was a positive outcome to a meeting with President Putin in Moscow. Our colleague from BBC Russian explains.
