
United States seizes oil tanker off Venezuela
This marks a sharp escalation in Washington's pressure on the Venezuelan government.
Venezuela has accused the United States of blatant theft and piracy after US troops seized an oil tanker off the country's coast. The foreign ministry said the move was part of a plan to deliberately plunder Venezuela's energy resources. US officials said the vessel was transporting sanctioned oil to Iran.
The Venezuelan opposition leader, Maria Corina Machado has said many people had risked their lives so she could travel to Norway to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. She was speaking to the BBC after her first appearance in public for almost a year.
M23 rebels in eastern Congo say they are now in full control of the city of Uvira. It is the last government-held settlement in South Kivu province. The Rwanda-backed group called on remaining Congolese soldiers to surrender. This comes after a peace deal was signed between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda last week that would see stability restored to the eastern part of DR Congo.
