Assad fled to Russia a year ago as rebels commanded by the new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, seized Damascus, toppling him. The head of the United Nations refugee agency has warned that Syria is in urgent need of more international assistance, one year after the fall of the Assad regime.

There has been renewed fighting between Thailand and Cambodia along their shared border with several hundred thousand people forced to evacuate.
