Parliament in France has passed security legislation designed to help protect against the likelihood of a convicted terrorist further endangering the public. Any such offender given a prison sentence of at least five years will have to be evaluated before being released, and possibly subjected to further conditions. (The legislation is expected to come into force before the end of the month. )(But the head of the lower house of parliament is referring it to France's Constitutional Council to ensure it maintains a balance between preventing attacks and respecting constitutionally guaranteed freedoms.)

The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that Hezbollah is playing with fire after an incident on the border between Israel and Lebanon. The Israeli military says that it started shooting to thwart an attempt by Hezbollah fighters to infiltrate Israel. But Hezbollah has denied this, saying it did not carry out any operation on the border. ( Instead, it accused Israel of taking action as a nervous response to a heightened state of alert. Tension has been growing since a Hezbollah member was reportedly killed by Israel in Syria last week. Hezbollah threatened retaliation. )
