Iran is bracing itself for the consequences of fresh economic and oil sanctions from the United States, which come into effect today. Iranian hardliners have held rallies across the country, denouncing the sanctions, while the US Secretary of State said he believed the sanctions will change Tehran’s behaviour in the region. So where will it all lead? Trita Parsi, Professor at Georgetown University and author of Losing an Enemy: Obama, Iran And The Triumph Of Diplomacy, gives his view.
The citizens of French territory New Caledonia have voted 56.4% to remain part of France, while 43.6% voted to become independent This was a tighter result than some polls had predicted, and the BBC’s Phil Mercer explains what this means for the future of the archipelago.
