Hundreds Die as Tsunami Strikes Indonesia

Huge waves smash through coastal towns on Sumatra and Java causing massive devastation

More than 220 people are known to have died and rescuers are still searching for survivors after huge waves smashed through coastal towns along the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra. The tsunami - which hit at night during a local holiday - was triggered by the erupting Anak Krakatoa volcano. Footage on social media showed members of the popular Indonesian rock band Seventeen, who were playing at a beach resort, being swept away. The Indonesian authorities have warned people to stay away from the coastline due to fears of another tsunami.
