
Robert Mugabe Defies Resignation Calls
The Zimbabwean president refuses to step down as he addresses the nation
The president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, has defied intense pressure to stand down. In a twenty-minute televised address, Mr Mugabe, flanked by military generals, said he intended to lead next month's congress of the ruling party, ZANU-PF. A party spokesman says they are following due process, but the opposition and the powerful war veterans group tell us they will go ahead with their efforts to impeach the president.
