The clock is ticking in Barcelona. The Catalan regional government has until Thursday morning to drop its push for independence from Spain. If they don't, they might lose control over the region. The Spanish constitution gives Madrid the powers to take whatever necessary action, if a region acts in a way that threatens the country's interests as a whole.

If things go according to plan, Kenya will hold a re-run of its overruled presidential election next week. However, the main opposition leader, Raila Odinga, has said he won't take part. This week a senior member of the electoral commission resigned saying that the electoral body was under political "siege". Can the election go ahead as planned?
