Catalan officials say that ninety per cent of voters have backed independence
The government of the Spanish region of Catalonia says that just over forty per cent of the region's population took part in Sunday's independence referendum. Of those, it said that ninety per cent had voted in favour of breaking away from Spain. Pro-independence Catalan mayor Jordi Sole told BBC Newsday why Catalonia had a right to statehood.
